F1 School Teams

A recently-formed team of budding motorsport engineers from The Leys won two trophies in the regional finals of the F1 in Schools Team Mach 4 competition.

Alex H (Y10) was team manager and CAD Design Engineer, Miles K (Y9) was design engineer, Toby G (Y9) was CAM manufacture engineer and Bobby R (Y10) was marketing and sponsorship manager. Their challenge was to design a prototype car to race down a 26- metre track, create a portfolio about it, gain sponsors and produce a presentation for the day.

They took first place in the Entry Level regional finals, held at Sprowston School, Norwich. They won the regional finals trophy and another award for their portfolio.

Nicola Perkins, Head of Design and Technology, was delighted by the team’s success. Her department recently opened its doors to teaching staff from other schools so they could find out how to follow its example and get involved in the F1 in Schools STEM Challenge. F1 in Schools is a social enterprise working with industry to teach pupils about STEM (science, technology, engineering and maths) through the appeal of Formula 1 motor racing.
